영어 Engagement를 우리말로 번역하는 게 참 어렵습니다. 여담이지만 GNI Innovation Challenge Round 2 발표를 준비하면서 통역하시는 분들께 engagement를 참여로 번역하는 건 애매하다고 말씀을 드릴 정도였습니다.

토머스 백달도 그렇게 이야기합니다. Participation과 Engagement를 다르게 사용하고 있다는 점을 유의하라고 말이죠. 그리고 비유를 듭니다, 한 어린 친구가 레고를 가져놀고 있는 사진을 보라고 하면서.

"Let me give you an example. Here you see a kid playing with LEGO (or Duplo in this case). She is engaging with LEGO. In other words, she is enjoying spending time with it, using it, finding an interest in it, etc. This is what it means to engage with something. It's a dedication of time, use, and value.“

무언가와 engage한다는 건, 곧 시간과 사용, 가치를 바치는 행위입니다. 좋아요 하나를 누르는 행위 그 이상을 의미한다는 거죠. 온라인 설문에 ‘참여’하는 것 그 이상이라는 얘기입니다.
